BJD RS nominee in soup over IT notice for tax evasion
Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) nominee for Rajya Sabha N Bhaskar Rao, who filed his nomination on Monday, landed in trouble today after Income Tax (IT) department reportedly served a notice against him for tax evasion.
Sources in the IT department said the strongman of south Odisha has evaded tax worth around Rs 41 lakh. According to reports, two IT officials visited his official residence in Bhubaneswar today.
Reacting to the notice, Rao said he is not aware about it. “I was in Puri and not in Bhubaneswar. The officials may have visited my residence in my absence. My chartered accountants generally deal with tax related matters. They will settle the issue if there is anything wrong,” he told OTV over phone.
The election for Rao to the Rajya Sabha is a foregone conclusion as the ruling party has the required members in the Assembly to ensure victory for all three candidates fielded by it.
Rao, along with his two party colleagues Bishnu Das and Prasanna Acharya, was nominated by the party supremo Naveen Patnaik for the upper House on Friday. All three had filed their nominations yesterday.
Notably, BJD’s Koraput district unit president and former Lok Sabha member Jayaram Pangi has disapproved of Rao as party candidate for Rajya Sabha.
He had said on Sunday that someone else should have been the party candidate in place of N. Bhaskar Rao as the latter holds the post of vice chairman of the State Planning Board.
