6 of family among 7 killed over sorcery

Bhubaneswar: In a macabre incident, six members of a family were killed by miscreants reportedly on the suspicion of practising sorcery in a Keonjhar village last night. Meanwhile, another person was beaten to death for the same reason in Rayagada district.

According to reports, unidentified miscreants brutally murdered six persons of the same family in Lohanda village under Joda police limits of Keonjhar district suspecting that one woman member of the family used to perform black magic.

The deceased were identified as Gura Munda (35), wife Budhuni (30), Sunil (16), Sambari (12), Kushanath (10) and Namita (3). Meanwhile, two other minor members of the family are fighting for life in a local hospital and their condition is said to be critical.

Police have arrested an accused for the murders and are investigating further. A case has been registered at Joda police station with case no.95 under Section 302/34.

Talking to the media here today, DGP Sanjiv Marik said the local DSP will carry out the investigation and Keonjhar SP will supervise it while Crime Branch ADG B.K. Sharma will monitor the progress of the probe in the case.

“The murder case has been put under ‘red flag’ category,” the DGP said, confirming that preliminary investigation has shown the murder was committed on the suspicion of practising sorcery.

Source said all the men of the village have absconded fearing police action.

In another such instance of barbarism, a person was allegedly beaten to death and subsequently his body was burnt down in Bisamacuttak of Rayagada district for the same reason. The victim has been identified as Jagabandhu Kalaka.

Last Saturday, Jagabandhu and his family members were severely beaten up and the mob took him into the jungles. After investigation, police recovered his dead body from the jungles today. The Kalakas were suspected to be behind the death of a person in the village last week.
