Playing with words, ‘One kid with a dream’ boy churns an Odia rap

The ‘One Kid with a dream’ boy has come of age, mellowed with time and is giving it back to his home state Odisha, in a first of its kind attempt, a pure rap in Odia. Samir Rishu Mohanty is back with a bang in the city tomorrow to complete the video shoot of his single titled ‘Odia rap’.

Starting from production, lyrics, recording to music, Odia rap is the sole venture of Samir.

After ‘One kid with a dream’ went viral, Samir was itching to come up with something that could be unique for Odisha, for, he strongly feels connected with his roots. Born to Japanese mother and Indian father, Samir was brought up in Puri till he left for Bangalore for higher studies. The decision to shift to Bangalore was again because of his kind of music, which Samir felt, would get the right surroundings to be honed and fine tuned. And he was proved right.

‘’After my single shot extensively in Odisha went viral, I had thought of doing something in pure Odia. Though there are a couple of Odia raps, technically they are not up to the mark. Am pretty well conversant with Odia language and I have put my knowledge to test when I wrote the song – with multi syllabi rhyming. It was a little complex but I had decided to make it sound great. I am hopeful about a good response,’’ says Samir who has performed at stage shows besides pubs in almost all places of India. His numbers have also been beamed on MTV and VH1 and garnered massive audience and popularity.

He fondly recollects the adulations he has received from rap greats like Raftaar and Blaaze. He is equally appreciative of the criticisms. ‘’Am happy my music is making noise and criticisms make us more heard.’’

Choosing between a high paying job and ‘risking’ a career in music have made Samir the hard working and persevering musician he is today. ‘’After studies, I have never sought any financial help from my parents. It was a challenge to sustain but I knew I will reach my destination and so I am here. Things are working out and getting better,’’ says the 27 year old before packing his bags to shoot in Odisha.
