The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to undertake a major redevelopment of the Unit-4 Non-Veg retail market, aiming to address longstanding issues and enhance civic infrastructure. According to sources, a comprehensive redevelopment plan has been prepared, which includes new market design, improved parking facilities, better waste management systems, and the construction of internal roads.
The proposal was reviewed during a high-level meeting attended by BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, the Commissioner, and other senior officials. Following the review, the authorities announced that all illegal encroachments inside the market will be removed to make space for the new layout. The eviction process is expected to begin soon.
The redesigned market will feature modern retail shops, dedicated parking zones, a proper slaughterhouse, and widened access roads to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and customers. For years, Unit-4 has faced severe parking congestion due to roadside parking and unregulated commercial expansion, leading to inconvenience for residents, vendors, and shoppers.
Officials stated that shopkeepers occupying space without authorization have been asked to vacate immediately. Strict action will be initiated against violators who do not comply.
Mayor Sulochana Das emphasised the need for cleanliness and responsible waste disposal within the market premises and urged vendors not to dump meat waste indiscriminately. She instructed that waste must be collected only in plastic drums to maintain hygiene.
“BMC Mayor directed us to keep the surroundings clean. Vendors used to dump their waste here and there, causing inconvenience. She said we will be provided with dustbins and the BMC vehicle will collect the waste,” said Ramjan Khan, a trader.
Chanchal Rana, BMC Commissioner, said, “This market generally sees a huge rush on Sunday. So, the BMC team, including the Mayor, visited here to take stock of the situation. After reviewing, we found that the market should be set up systematically. We have identified parking places, and encroachments will be cleared in a day or two. We will also prepare a master plan for the market.”

“While the wholesale market will be shifted, a systematic market will be set up for the retailers. We have identified separate parking places for traders and customers. We are providing them with dustbins and covers,” said Sulochana Das, BMC Mayor.
