BMC Forms Enforcement Squads To Check Illegal Faecal Sludge Disposal

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has constituted two enforcement squads to prevent illegal and indiscriminate disposal of faecal sludge and septage at vulnerable places of the capital city.

The squads will comprise officials of the BMC, Police, Traffic and RTOs who will monitor the disposal at seven designated places in Smart City. The development comes shortly after the BMC decided to impose penalties for open defecation and urination in the city.

The vulnerable places are road side drains on both sides of the Baramunda bus stop flyover (towards Khandagiri), drain near Cosmopolis housing complex, Khandagiri, roadside drain between Fire Station Square and CRP Square and those between Jayadev Vihar Square and Acharya Vihar Square, sewers passing between club town, Patia, Lingipur to Palasuni (by-pass road) and Silicon village to Sikharchandi Chowk .

Apart from these susceptible places, the enforcement squads will also keep an eye on other places in the city as and when they get information about illegal and indiscriminate disposal by any person.

During enforcement, the squads will impose penalties on the violators as per the schedule II of the FSSM Regulation, 2018. Besides, they will ensure that the sludge of the impound vehicles is deposed at the Basuaghai treatment plant in Bhubaneswar.

It is worth mentioning that the BMC on Saturday issued a directive mentioning that people found openly defecating or urinating in the city will be penalised Rs 200 and Rs 150 respectively.
