Officials said the census aims to assess the growing number of blackbucks in the region and ensure better conservation planning. The exercise began at 7 am and is being carried out with enhanced monitoring measures this year.

Annual Census Underway

The blackbuck census in the area was first initiated in 2011. While the counting was earlier conducted once every two years, it has been carried out annually since last year due to a steady rise in the blackbuck population. Officials said the increase in numbers has made regular monitoring essential.

A total of 28 teams have been deployed for the census. The Berhampur Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) and the Asika Ranger are directly involved in supervising the process.

Teams, Methods and Technology

Officials said each team comprises an expert, a local resident and a student to ensure accuracy and local support. The census is being conducted across four different areas, with 70 units participating in the exercise.

Blackbucks are being identified based on colour, with black-coloured animals counted as males and brown-coloured ones as females. Multiple methods are being used for the census, including drone surveillance. Officials said the use of drones is helping them track the animals effectively and maintain records that will be useful for future conservation efforts.
