Berhampur: Worried over the death of five elephants and a foetus in a train accident on Saturday night, BJP on Tuesday demanded a high-level probe into the incident as the Odisha government and the Railways Authorities entered into a blame game over the incident.

"The Central government should conduct a high level inquiry into the death of jumbo," senior BJP leader and former deputy speaker, state assembly Ram Chandra Panda said.

The elephants were being killed as forest officials failed to drive the wild animals to their habitats, Panda alleged adding that the elephants were camping in the area for last five years.

At least six persons have died and several others crippled due to the elephant attack in Ganjam district while around 15 jumbo lost their lives due the men-elephant conflict in the area in the last five years.

The elephant had also damaged the standing crops worth over Rs 50,000, Panda alleged. The elephants were migrating from Chandaka sanctuary to Rambha and Ganjam areas, he pointed out.
