Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is all set to take its battle for the long standing demand, special state status, to New Delhi where the ruling party has planned to launch a massive rally at Ramlila Maidan on June 12.

More than 30,000 people are expected to join the gathering to mount pressure on Center to concede their demand, BJD sources said.

“A rally which has been named as ‘Swabhiman Samabesh’ will be held in New Delhi on June 12. Around 30,000 people will join the rally and present their demand. We expect rise in footfalls at the rally as many Odia people staying in Delhi are interested to join hands”, BJD vice president and Panchayati Raj minister Kalpataru Das said.

Such a move came after the Center rejected Odisha’s demand for special category state status rcently. In a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia mentioned that the State does not deserve for such status as most of the guidelines laid down by the National Development Council (NDC) are not satisfied in case of Odisha.
