The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is facing a growing internal crisis as its strength in the Odisha Assembly continues to decline, with legislators distancing themselves from the party one after another. The party’s MLA count has now fallen from 51 to 48, raising concerns over organisational stability.

The situation worsened after senior leaders Arvind Mohapatra and Sanatan Mahakud were suspended from the party, a day back. While the BJD leadership cited corruption and anti-party activities as reasons for the disciplinary action, the move has triggered fresh controversy within political circles.

Arvind Mohapatra has openly challenged the party to prove the allegations of corruption and betrayal levelled against him. His strong rebuttal has further fuelled the debate, with many questioning the timing and basis of the suspensions.

Political observers say the developments have only exposed the growing factionalism within the conch party. At a time when the party is already struggling to maintain unity, the exit or distancing of MLAs is adding to the leadership’s troubles.

Sources indicate that dissatisfaction among several legislators has been simmering for some time, and recent disciplinary actions may further deepen the rift. The shrinking number of MLAs could also weaken the party’s influence inside the Assembly.

With internal differences becoming public, the BJD now faces a major challenge in restoring cohesion and preventing further erosion of its political strength in Odisha.
