Political tension is running high in Rayagada Municipality after Biju Janata Dal (BJD) launched a vigorous exercise to retain its hold over the Vice-Chairperson post ahead of a crucial no-confidence vote.

According to sources, BJD Supremo and former Odisha Chief Minister (CM) Naveen Patnaik has personally intervened in the matter, issuing a letter with strict instructions to all party councillors. Naveen has directed BJD councillors to vote against the no-confidence motion scheduled for tomorrow.

The former Chief Minister has reportedly warned that any councillor defying the party whip will face disciplinary action. Party leader Jagannath Saraka has been assigned the responsibility of handing over the official notice containing these directions to all councillors.

“You, all the elected Councillors of BJD from Rayagada Municipality shall remain present in the meeting for No-Confidence motion against the Vice-Chairperson, scheduled to be held on 09.10.2025 from 11am onwards and vote against the No-Confidence motion,” Naveen’s letter read.

Meanwhile, political speculation has intensified after reports emerged that 19 BJD councillors have gone into hiding. These councillors are reportedly extending support to former MP Bhaskar Rao, who recently resigned from the BJD and voiced his dissent against the party.

With the no-confidence vote just hours away, Rayagada’s political scene remains tense and uncertain, as the BJD leadership works to prevent internal divisions and retain its control over the key municipal post.
