Kendrapara: At a time when assessment of the damages caused by cyclone Fani in Kendrapara is yet to be completed, politics is now active in Patkura over alleged distribution of relief materials by BJD candidate Sabitri Agarwalla in presence of government officials.

Terming it as gross violation of model code of conduct, the Kendrapara district BJP unit alleged that though the matter was brought to the notice of returning officer, no action has been taken in this regard.

Moreover, the saffron party has further alleged that the ruling party is trying to influence voters in Patkura by saying that relief will be provided to people who will vote for BJD.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Patkura Assembly polls which was earlier scheduled to be held on May 19 has been extended to be conducted within the following 60 days.

“After stalling the democratic process in Patkura, BJD’s candidate has openly violated the model code of conduct,” said Bhubanmohan Jena, State BJP vice-president.

A delegation of BJP today moved the Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) over the matter alleging that BJD is using its party symbol during relief distribution in the area.

“The election to Patkura Assembly constituency has been postponed and taking advantage of cyclone Fani, BJD workers are distributing government relief materials after collecting it from district Collectorate. We have raised objection and met the CEO as BJD party symbol is being used during relief distribution,” said BJP leader, Prakash Mishra.

Responding to BJP allegations, BJD candidate Sabitri Agarwalla’s son Sajany said, “All the allegations are baseless as there is no provision of distribution of cash during relief distribution. All the relief was distributed by government officials and the process was completed much before my mother reached the spot.”
