Bhubaneswar: In a significant development, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up a bio-waste treatment plant soon to boost cleanliness in the city ahead of the much-awaited Hockey World Cup this year.

The move follows the decision of the Odisha government to ban plastic use in the city and other parts of the State from October 2.

BMC Commissioner Krishan Kumar informed that the process to set up of the new facility has already begun with identification of land. By the end of September the tender process will be completed and soon after that the construction of the plant will begin,” Krishan said after a meeting today.

“In the first phase, a composting plant with a capacity of five tonne will be constructed while a bio-gas plant with a capacity of 40 tonne per day will be established soon after the completion of tender works,” Krishan said.

Krishan also added that the ban on plastics is also being taken up on a serious note and very soon awareness programmes will be launched.
