In a major breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police on Saturday busted an interstate illegal arms trafficking racket operating between Bihar and Odisha. Acting on reliable intelligence, the Special Crime Unit intercepted a Bolero vehicle near Bhubaneswar’s Khandagiri Square and seized a massive cache of sophisticated weapons allegedly being transported to Ganjam and Berhampur.
According to police, criminals from Odisha, especially Ganjam-based gangs, have been procuring ‘Made in Bihar’ high-end weapons, including semi-automatic pistols and carbines. These weapons, typically used by security forces during large operations, were being bought by organised criminal networks, indicating the involvement of high-profile mafia groups.
Police Commissioner revealed that the arms were being smuggled from Bihar, using Bhubaneswar as a transit point before being delivered to buyers in southern Odisha, especially Ganjam.

During the operation, police seized 10 semi-automatic pistols, one automatic carbine, and 12 live rounds of ammunition. Two key middlemen involved in the arms trade were arrested—Sumanta Naik from Boarapala in Angul and Saubhagya Naik from Dhenkanal.
The arrested individuals had been acting as intermediaries, arranging procurement and delivery of the firearms to criminal clients.
Investigators are now focusing on identifying the buyers, their motives, and the mastermind behind the racket. A special police team has already been dispatched to Bihar to trace the suppliers. Additionally, a list of individuals in Odisha who reportedly paid advance amounts for illegal weapons has been prepared, and they will be interrogated soon.
This is not an isolated incident. Over the last two months alone, the Commissionerate Police has seized 33 illegal firearms, including multiple carbines, and arrested eight people. The repeated recovery of sophisticated weapons has raised serious concerns about the growing presence of advanced firepower among local criminal groups.
Police officials said that exposing the full network of this arms syndicate is now their top priority, and more arrests are expected in the coming days.
