Bhubaneswar: Odisha government on Saturday decided to reintroduce eggs in mid-day meal in Bhubaneswar schools. Block Education Officer (BEO) Sasmita Mali today informed that the government has decided to serve boiled eggs to students in mid-day meal twice a week- Wednesday and Saturday.

“About 50,000 children of 276 schools in Bhubaneswar will be served eggs in mid-day meal. The district education office will give Rs 5 per egg to schools,” Mali added.

Meanwhile, students welcomed the decision of the government. “We are very happy that the State government has decided to serve eggs in our schools. Earlier, we were getting eggs but it was stopped when a canteen started supplying food to the schools here,” said a student.

The State government had stopped supply of eggs to all schools in Bhubaneswar from 2016. Reportedly, the Akshaya Patra foundation, which provides mid-day meals in the schools, follows ISKCON’s principles of vegetarian foods and does not serve eggs.

It is pertinent to mention here that under the Integrated Child Development Scheme, Odisha government provides five eggs per week for children below the age of six at Anganwadi centres and two eggs per week at government schools across the State.
