New Year festivities in Odisha’s capital city saw liquor sales reach unprecedented levels, with Bhubaneswar recording sales worth over Rs 32 crore in just one week, according to official data from the Excise Department.
During the final week of 2025, the city witnessed the sale of nearly 2.5 lakh litres of foreign liquor, along with 1.5 lakh litres of country liquor. Beer consumption also saw a sharp rise, with 1,78,000 litres sold during the same period.
Christmas to Zero Night Rush
Officials said liquor sales peaked between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, commonly known as Zero Night. Clubs, pubs and off-shops across the city reported brisk business as celebratory crowds stocked up on alcohol.

Break-up of Sales Figures
Between December 25 and 31, foreign liquor alone accounted for sales worth Rs 28.04 crore. Beer sales stood at Rs 3.56 crore, while country liquor contributed Rs 94.20 lakh to the total revenue. Overall, liquor sales during the period touched Rs 32.55 crore.
The figures underline the scale of New Year celebrations in the capital and reflect a sharp spike in alcohol consumption during the festive season. The Excise Department’s data highlights how major occasions continue to drive record sales across Bhubaneswar year after year.
