In a significant development, the Odisha government has decided to form a new economic region covering Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Paradip. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister. The plan aims to develop cities in the region as growth hubs through improved connectivity and infrastructure.
As part of the economic region, three ring roads with a total length of 645 kilometres will be constructed. Under the Capital Ring Road project, a 432-kilometre road will be built connecting Paradeep to Puri via Tangi, Saptasajya and Rameshwar.
An outer ring road of 148 kilometres will be developed through Jatamundia, Trisulia and Urali in Cuttack district, extending up to Balipatana, Pipili, Jatni and Khordha. Additionally, a 65-kilometre ring road is planned in Khordha district, connecting Tamando to Chandaka, Pahala and Dhauli.
New Rail Connectivity Planned
The project also includes rail infrastructure development. A 32-kilometre railway line is proposed between Puri and Konark. Another 70-kilometre railway line will connect Konark to Bhubaneswar via Nimapara.
Boost to Industry and Tourism
The Odisha government believes that the formation of this economic region will lead to significant growth in the industrial and tourism sectors in the connected areas. To ensure effective implementation, CM Majhi has directed various departments to frame new policies and amend existing ones wherever necessary.
With an integrated approach to road and rail development, the proposed economic region is expected to transform connectivity, drive economic activity and position the Bhubaneswar–Cuttack–Puri–Paradip corridor as a major growth engine for Odisha.
