Beware! Hefty Fines For Traffic Violators In Odisha From September 1
Bhubaneswar: Think twice before you jump any traffic signal or hit the road without a helmet or seat belt as the new norms laid down by the 2019 Motor Vehicle Act will come into effect in Odisha from September 1, 2019.
Penalty on violation of traffic rules such as over-speeding, drunk driving, driving without helmet and other violations has been increased manifold under the recently amended Motor Vehicles Act.
“The Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill has been passed and the Government of India is likely to issue notification in a day or two. As the penalty for several traffic violations have been increased, we urge the people to follow traffic norms,” said G. Srinivas, State Transport Department Secretary.
Under the new provision, a person will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 500 for driving without a valid driving license and if one is caught for drunken driving, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be levied. Earlier, Rs 2,000 was collected as fine for drunken driving.
The fine for rash driving has also been revised and a violator would have to pay an amount between Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000. Over-speeding would invite penalty of nearly Rs 5000 instead of Rs 500 now.
Not wearing a seat belt while driving will attract a fine up to Rs 1,000.
Penalties are being increased even for two-wheeler riders as well. If one is without a helmet, a fine of Rs 1,000 would be levied and a fine of Rs 2,000 will be collected in case of riding with more than the prescribed number of people.
