Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped locals after they spotted a gharial in Kuakhai River on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. As per eye-witnesses, an eight-ft-long Gharial was spotted between Haridaspur and Banguari region of the river.

Following the incident, the officials of Balipatna Forest division launched a massive operation on Friday to trace the gharial. Through loudspeakers, people are also being warned to stay away from the river till the reptile is captured.

"Gharials are most timid & least aggressive. It’s thin fragile jaws make it physically impossible devouring any large animal. It preys solely on fish & small invertebrates," tweeted CEO of Chilika Development Authority, Susanta Nanda.
