Bhubaneswar: Come March 5, the Biju Patnaik airport here will welcome its guests with a vibrant look when the much-awaited new domestic terminal will be thrown open to public, thus paving way for an international tag.

“The new terminal is ready for operations which will be inaugurated by Union civil aviation minister on March 5,” said airport director Sharad Kumar.

The state-of-the-art terminal, spread across over 1,60,000 square feet has all modern amenities including two aerobridges for smooth movement of passengers.

This apart, the terminal will be completely air-conditioned with arrangements for 24x7 power supply. There will be four lifts and two escalators with digitally-controlled public address and car-calling system, besides space for parking 10 luxury coach buses and 400 taxis. The new terminal has covered walkway and parking.

“We are planning to handle operations of 30 flights per day from the current 20 flights. We want this airport to be on the international map,” added Kumar.

Notably, the airport authorities had conducted a trial run of the newly built terminal on November 8.

Hinting that international operations would be started before Rath Yatra, Kumar said, “After shifting of domestic operations to the new terminal is done, we will start renovation work at the old terminal for international operations. The work is expected to be completed within one-and-half month.”
