Balasore: In a major relief for former minister Raghunath Mahanty and his wife Pritilata, the Balasore District & Sessions court today dropped charges of domestic violence (DV) leveled against them in a case filed by their daughter-in-law Barsa Swony Choudhury.
The Mohanty couple had prayed to a local court here to drop their names from the case while the court had rejected their petition after a series of hearing in January.
Barswa Swony had filed the DV case at the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court here against her estranged husband Rajashree Mohanty in which her father-in-law Raghunath Mohanty and mother-in-law Pritilata Mohanty were made parties.
On January 14 this year, the Balasore Family Court had directed Rajashree Mohanty to pay his estranged wife a monthly interim maintenance of Rs 25, 000 in an alimony case filed by her.
The former Odisha Law and Urban Development Minister and his wife, both of whom are accused in a dowry torture case filed by their daughter-in-law, were arrested from West Bengal in 2013.
Mohanty had been evading arrest ever since he resigned as minister on March 15, 2013, a day after Barsha Swony Chaudhury filed the case against him, his wife, son Rajashree Mohanty, daughter Rupashree and son-in-law Suvendu Madhual.
Barsha has alleged that the Mohanty family had been torturing her for getting, among other things, a vehicle and Rs. 25 lakh in cash. She also accused her husband of having extramarital affairs.
