Barabati Stadium in Cuttack set for upgrade as Odisha government signals expansion

Historic Barabati Stadium in Cuttack may soon undergo a significant expansion, with the Odisha government indicating plans to increase its seating capacity. The development follows Team India’s emphatic victory over South Africa in a T20 match played on Tuesday, after which Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi hinted at the possibility of upgrading the iconic venue.

CM Majhi said a proposal to enhance spectator capacity at Barabati Stadium is already under consideration. The matter will be discussed with stakeholders, and a decision is expected shortly. He added that improving the infrastructure of one of Odisha’s oldest cricket venues remains a priority.

“The government has taken the plan to increase the capacity of the stadium into consideration. A decision in this regard will be taken soon,” CM Majhi said.

Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) Secretary Sanjay Behera also confirmed that expansion plans are being examined. According to Behera, discussions on capacity enhancement and modernisation are progressing, and formal proposals are likely to be placed before the authorities soon.

“I congratulate everyone for successfully hosting the match. I have only one agenda, which is to renovate Barabati Stadium. I am hopeful that it will be done soon with all our collective efforts,” said Behera.

Cuttack MLA Sofia Firdous said, “We were confident of winning. I am hopeful that the Odisha government will take all necessary steps for the development and upgradation of the historic Barabati stadium.”

If approved, the move could position Barabati Stadium for more international fixtures and offer improved facilities for cricket fans in the state.
