Bank account of Odisha worker overseas sees Rs 45 Lakh remittance

A large sum of foreign remittance, credited to the bank account of a man from Odisha’s Kendrapara district, drew attention and curiosity on Wednesday.

Ananta Karan, a resident of Aul block in Kendrapara, reportedly received more than Rs 45 lakh in his bank account, transferred from abroad. Sources said Karan had been working overseas for several years, during which his financial condition improved significantly.

The money, credited in the form of dollar remittances, has raised questions locally regarding how and why such a substantial amount was transferred at one time. People in the locality are keen to know whether the funds came as accumulated savings from his years of employment abroad or through other financial arrangements.

Officials said overseas workers often remit large sums after completing long-term contracts, though verification of the transaction details is necessary to rule out any irregularities. The recent development has sparked discussion in the region about foreign earnings, banking compliance, and remittance transparency.

Further clarity is expected once banking and regulatory procedures verify the source and purpose of the funds.

“Initially, I had gone to Singapore, and then to Malaysia, Oman, Dubai and Kuwait. I had also gone to Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Insurance, Provident Fund, and GPF money are usually deducted from the salaries of several people like me from Odisha, who are working overseas. The deducted amount is subsequently refunded by the employer companies after an employee leaves the job,” Ananta Karan said to OTV.

“I started a foreign job in the year 2000. I had left my job for a few years after I became sick, and had joined again. Finally, I quit my job in 2014. After which, my health condition has completely deteriorated,” Ananta Karan added when contacted.
