Rourkela: Normal life was hit in the steel city as the 12 hour bandh called by the Bar Association here, demanding action against the police in the Judicial Magistrate assault case, began on Friday morning.

The city witnessed deserted streets as public transport largely remained off the roads and shops and commercial establishments remained closed. Lawyers were seen blocking the roads by burning tyres.

However, schools and colleges were spared from the bandh as examinations are on. Heavy deployment of police personnels was there at prime locations to avoid any untoward incident.

The bandh supported by major political parties like BJP, Congress and CPM would continue till 6 pm.
