Berhampur: Tribal outfits on Thursday observed a dawn to dusk bandh protesting alleged police excess on agitating villagers who were demanding release of 27 people arrested on charges of having Maoist links.

Organizations under the banner of Banavasi Surakhya Parishad, Kandhamal Adivasi Adhikar Manch and Odisha Adivasi Andolan Manch and several other groups joined hands to make the bandh call successful.

As the bandh call was not announced earlier, life was hit in Daringbadi, Simanbadi and Bhamarbadi panchayats. Besides, commuters were stranded at various places as roads were blocked by the agitating villagers. Vehicular traffic was affected; shops and other business establishments were also shut.

As per reports, around 50 girl students from Jharsuguda were stranded due to the bandh.

To maintain law and order, five platoons of security personnel were deployed in the area and two platoons were stationed at Daringibadi’s block office which was gheraoed by the protestors on Wednesday. 

However, despite bandh Tehsildar of Baliguda along with SDPO and BDO joined office today.

It may be recalled that at least 10 people including women were injured in lathicharge on Monday who were demanding release of villagers arrested on suspicion of having Maoist links.
