Bhubaneswar: With Biju Janadal Dal (BJD) calling for a state wide bandh on May 31, coinciding with a similar move by National Democratic Alliance (NDA), other political parties in the state have also joined hands to strengthen the movement, thanks to the steepest-ever hike of petrol prices by Rs 7.50 a litre.

Union Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy’s Friday statement on no recent withdrawal of petrol price hike, has ignited the movement as well.

In a joint press statement issued by CPI, CPI(M), Forward Bloc, RJD and Samajwadi Party, the respective party leaders have urged the common men to join hands and support their bandh call on May 31. BJD’s call was decided in a party meeting today headed by Finance Minister Prafulla Ghadei which was also attended by Revenue Minister Surya Narayan Patra, Health Minister Prasanna Acharya, senior party leader Damodar Rout, MLA Arun Sahu and Sanjay Dasburma.

The party workers of Yuva Biju Janata Dal on Thursday sat on a dharna before Rajbhavan protesting against hike in petrol prices. Several dharnas, rallies, road blockades and protests across the state marked the price hike on Thursday.
