News from Balangir

Named after the headquarter town of Balangir, this district was formed on 1st November 1949. It is flanked in the northwest by the Gandhamardan hill. Many hill streams traverse it. The name Balangir is said to have been derived from Balaramgarh, a fort built here in the 16th Century by Balram Deo, the 19th Raja of Balangir and founder of Sambalpur kingdom. The Balangir District is surrounded by Subarnapur district in east, Nuapada District in the west, Kalahandi District in the south and Bargarh District in the north.

As per reports, Kahnu Mallick, a migrant labourer from Sulekela, had gone to Telangana along with four family members to work in a brick kiln two months ago. There Kahnu were taken ill due to alleged work pressure from the labour contractor.

As per reports, an LPG cylinder blast on February 10 at Kanut village resulted in the injury of six persons from two families. Out of the six injured, five were from one family. Malati Mahakud was the sixth person.

As per reports, a cylinder blast at Ada Bariha’s home at Kanut village on February 10 resulted in serious injury to three of the same family. They were admitted to a hospital in Rourkela for treatment where one person died on February 12 and the other two died yesterday.
