Bhubaneswar:  Having made no headway in the brutal murder of the pentagenarian lady even after 48 hours of the incident, the Commissionerate Police on Friday found that prime suspect in the case, the security guard of the house has a criminal background.

Investigating officials on condition of anonymity told OTV that criminal antecedents of Diptiranjan Pattnaik, employed with Rajendra Security Agency, were revealed after a thorough investigation.

“A case was registered at Laxmi Sagar Police Station against the suspect (Pattnaik) this year on charges of burglary in an apartment in the area,” the official stated.

Residents of Akrosh Gokul Plaza, which falls under Laxmi Sagar police limits revealed that Diptiranjan was suspected to have been involved in a house burglary of this apartment six months ago and a case was lodged against him then.

“Probably after the incident, he was shifted to guard ‘Mudhukunj’, where the Pattnaik family was staying,” said a local.

“The police have done precious little to act on the house theft case, otherwise he (the suspect) would not have been here,” opined he.

Meanwhile with Diptiranjan still at large, the police are yet to find the motive behind the gruesome killing. A team of the investigating officials too returned empty handed on Friday after unable to find the suspect at his native village in Niali, in Cuttack district.

On the other hand, Lochan Pattnaik, son of the deceased told media that he had complete faith on the police to trace the culprit.

“Every second we are waiting to hear from the police. The police have to do their job and I think the city's administration and the government must take into account that we are living in an extremely unsafe environment and this could too happen to somebody else's mother, sister, and family,”, said a visibly shaken Lochan.

“This is unthinkable...and in a place like Bhubaneswar nor you nor I can ever imagine such a thing can happen...Before he becomes a threat to somebody else's family, he must be caught immediately,” added he.
