Bhubaneswar: The mother of top Naxal leader Azad today sat on dharna in front the Jharpada jail here in protest against the jail authorities who did not grant her permission to meet her son lodged inside the prison on security reasons. Azad`s mother Dunna Kamulamma indicated that her son would start fast unto death inside the prison from Tuesday.

Dunna Kamulamma today morning reached the Jharpada jail to meet her son lodged in the prison. She, however, failed to meet her son personally as the jail authorities denied permission. Kamulamma resorted to dharna in front of the jail in protest against the jail authorities for denying her permission to meet her son Azad. Kamulamma had earlier written a letter to the chief minister to release her son from the prison. She had in her letter stated that otherwise her son would undertake fast unto death inside the prison.

Kamulamma alleged that her son Azad was released on May 24, 2011 by the Andhara police six days after his surrender. She, however, alleged that four days after his  release by the Andhra police, the Odisha police took Azad on remand on the assurance that he would be released after interrogation. But the Odisha police, Kamulamma rued, has lodged Azad in prison since June 1, 2011.

The Viswa Hindu Parishad(VHP) has however opposed the demand to release the top  Naxal leader. Maoist leader D Kesav Rao, lodged in the Jharpada jail has threatened to undertake fast unto death inside the prison from Tuesday unless he is released by the government. Kesav Rao alleged that the Odisha police framed several cases and kept him in prison though he had surrendered before the Andhra police last year. The official reaction was not however available.
