Bhubaneswar: Days after the implementation of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, an auto-rickshaw driver here in the capital city is believed to have witnessed a nightmare after he was penalised a hefty Rs 47,500 for violating various traffic rules.
A Traffic police near Acharya Vihar today levied the penalty on the auto-rickshaw driver and issued him a challan for drunk driving and not carrying documents including his driving licence, vehicle insurance, the pollution certificate apart from using the vehicle without permit.
Reports claimed that the owner of the auto-rickshaw, Kanduri Khatua of Kishore Prasad area in Nayagarh, who was present in the vehicle driven by one Hari Bandhu Kanhar, was unable to produce all the necessary documents when asked by police. Kanhar on the other hand was under the influence of alcohol, the breath analyser revealed.
According to the challan copy, the owner was fined Rs 5,000 for allowing unauthorised person to drive vehicle, Rs 5000 for driving vehicle without a valid driving licence, Rs 10000 for drunk driving, Rs 10000 for violating air and noise pollution, Rs 5000 for using vehicle without registration and FC, Rs 10000 for violating permit conditions, Rs 2000 for plying without insurance and Rs 500 as general offence.
The total challan amount of Rs 47,500 is pending while the driver has been asked to deposit the sum at the Driving Testing Centre in Chandrasekharpur.
"Awareness drive was undertaken in the first couple of days, and enforcement began from today. People have become more law-abiding and are adhering to the rules of the roads," said Twin City Traffic Police Commissioner, Amresh Panda.
On Tuesday, a similar incident happened in Gurugram, New Delhi where a man was fined a whopping Rs 23,000 for riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet and also for not carrying important documents.
The new traffic rules came into force on September 1, 2019.
