Attack On Sikh Man In Bhubaneswar: Chargesheet Filed; Questions Raised Over Bail To Accused

Bhubaneswar: The Twin City Police Commissionerate on Friday filed a chargesheet at SDJM court against three accused in connection with the brutal attack on Parvinder Pal Singh, a Sikh businessman.

The chargesheet has been filed against one Deepak Jena, who is reportedly the nephew of a former BJD corporator, his associates Sankar Rout and Deepak Mohanty on the basis of the medical examination report, CCTV footage and eyewitnesses.

The trio had mercilessly attacked Singh in presence of police on Tuesday afternoon in Laxmi Sagar area of the capital city after an altercation over vehicle parking.

While the incident was condemned by people from all walks of life, Singh had expressed serious concerns over safety of his family’s and his own after the accused were released on bail barely four hours after their arrest.

It is claimed that the accused were released from the jail as lesser charges were framed against them by the cops. “It was an attempt to murder case and there was a threat to his (Parvinder Pal Singh) life. Prima facie it seems that the accused should have been booked under section 307 of the IPC. However, it seems that the police have levelled bailable charges against them purposefully,” said senior advocate, Dharanidhar Nayak.

Senior Congress leader Panchanan Kanungo, said, “I feel something fishy in the case as the accused got bail very soon. The Director General of Police (DGP) should explain whether the law is taking its own course or it is guided by some people.”

Likewise, BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan said, “Police slap IPC Section 307 when eggs are hurled, but the lenience shown in this case is quite concerning. This reveals that police is under pressure.”
Moreover, police have filed chargesheet against only three persons while Parvinder Pal Singh had alleged that he was attacked by 6-7 people.

Furthermore, after BJD’s Bhubaneswar Central MLA Ananta Narayan Jena and DSP Anup Kanungo visited Singh’s house late night on Wednesday, many have raised questions over the role of BJD and Police in the whole issue.

Parvinder Pal Singh, on the other hand, said that his protest against demolition of Mangu Mutt in Puri might be the reason behind the attack on him. “It may be a conspiracy against me as I had led a protest march in Puri recently,” he said.

Meanwhile, protesting the incident and the immediate bail to the accused, members of the Sikh community in Bhubaneswar took out a candlelight rally today. Covering their eyes with black cloth, members of the community protested the lenient charges against the accused and demanded charges under section 307 of IPC.
