Bhubaneswar: At least five persons, including a woman, a girl and an old man, were killed as a high-velocity norwester hit coastal Orissa on Tuesday evening, uprooting trees and damaging houses.

A 53-year-old woman, identified as Bilasini Nayak, was killed when an uprooted tree fell on her in Gop area of Puri district this evening, additional district magistrate P K Senapati said.

An eight-year-old girl died when a coconut tree was uprooted and fell on her at Kharidapada in Mahakalapada area of Kendrapara district, while an elderly man died in a similar incident at Olasudha in Jagatsighpur district, officials said.

A woman, aged around 25 years, was injured when a tree fell in the district headquarter town of Jagatsinghpur as thundershower accompanied by hail and gusty surface winds lashed over half a dozen districts of the state.
