According to an FIR lodged by the house owner, the incident took place at the residence of Amulya Jena in Kochaniamba under Umerkote block. Jena had kept the cash at home after selling a piece of land nearly three months ago.
Late at night, while Amulya was asleep alone, six armed assailants allegedly broke open the door and entered the house. The robbers threatened him with a sharp weapon, tied his hands and legs, and looted Rs 70 lakh kept in an almirah. They also fled with gold jewellery, including rings, a locket and earrings.
After the accused escaped, Jena somehow managed to free himself and alerted his family members, who then informed the police. Cops reached the spot on Monday morning and have begun an investigation from multiple angles.
“While I was sleeping, four men broke down the door and entered. Then they assaulted me. Soon, the four became six. They threatened me with knives, tied my hands and feet, and gagged me. They took 14 rings, my mother’s earrings, my niece’s three lockets, and 70 lakh rupees in cash,” Amulya Jena said.
“This lasted for about an hour or an hour and a half at night; they threw me into a room, and fled. All six of them were wearing masks. I was terrified for my life and couldn't say a word to them. They used abusive language and beat me. They broke the cupboards in the room; an iron rod and a large chopper are still lying there,” the victim man stated.
“We had recently sold some land in my mother's name; half the payment had been received, while the other half is still pending. Those 70 lakh rupees were in the house, and they took all the cash and gold. They entered through the front and left through the backyard. I was tied up, but after about half an hour, I managed to untie myself and called my brother and sister-in-law. I was sleeping alone in the room. We went to the police station, and a team arrived this morning to investigate,” Amulya expressed.
“Based on a complaint, Umerkote PS case No. 57 has been registered under Section 110 (2) of the BNS. Following the instructions of Nabarangpur SP, three teams have been formed to investigate the matter. The preliminary investigation is currently underway, and a scientific team, along with a dog squad, has also visited the scene,” Umerkote SDPO, Subhendu Kumar Sabar, said while speaking to mediapersons.
