Anti-liquor protests intensify in Banki, locals hit streets
Cuttack: Protesting lack of measures on part of authorities to put a check on illegal sale of liquor, locals hit the streets by staging a road blockade in Banki today.
Alleging that such illegal trade has led to a spurt in crime and other anti-social activities in the area, locals blocked the Cuttack-Banki road by burning tyres.
Movement of vehicular traffic on the route was severely disrupted due to the agitation.
Sources said locals resorted to the protest after no action was allegedly taken by police to nab the traders involved in liquor trade in the region.
“Several women activists had staged a demonstration three days back against the illicit liquor trade in the area. Moreover, the liquor traders attacked me and some other people in the area yesterday,” said Niranjan, a local resident.
