Ganjam: While the current spat between lawyers and police is yet to be resolved, another case of assault by police has been reported from Ganjam where a lawyer Haraprasad Das was allegedly thrashed by police personnel inside Buguda Police Station today.

As per initial reports, the assault took place after a discussion turned into a heated argument between Das and some cops inside the police station over a disputed road.

"Inspector-in-charge of Buguda police station has been blocking the road to the land owned by my client Purna Chandra Sahu. When I asked the IIC about it, he physically assaulted me leaving bruises all over my body," Das said.

Following the incident, Das received injuries and was admitted to Buguda Community Health Centre in the district. While a tense situation has prevailed near the police station, Buguda police is yet to respond on the matter.

Earlier today, the Orissa High Court deferred the hearing on the assault of a lawyer by police in Cuttack till Thursday as Crime Branch sought more time for submission of complete chargesheet.

During the hearing held on November 9, the Crime Branch had asked for six weeks’ time for submission of the charge sheet, which the court had denied.

The High Court had also directed the State government not to revoke the suspension order of the constable who was allegedly involved in the assault of the lawyer in Cuttack, which triggered the agitation.
