Bhubaneswar: The wait is over. The Odisha branch of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) would soon become operaional in the state capital. The admission for 50 MBBS seats would commence in August while the 500-bed hospital would become operational by December.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress of the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Union health secretary, Pravat Kumar Pradhan today said in the state capital that the construction work of the state branch of the pioneer institute had reached the final phase. Pradhan elaborated that 65 percent of the hospital work was almost over and similarly 70 percent of the college building was completed. The health secretary said,"This year 50 students would be admitted in the MBBS while it will go up to one hundred from the next year. The admission for the post-graduate courses would take place after that."

Former prime minister Atal Behari Bajpayee had laid the foundations for the Rs. 820 crore super-speciality hospital and college. The 978-bed hospital would have 15 super-speciality and 18 speciality wards. The Centre had approved six super-speciality hospital including the Bhubaneswar one.

The chief secretary Bijoy Pattanaik during discussions with the Union health  demanded that the number of MBBS seats in the three government medical colleges in the state should be increased by at least 100 for each college and sought Central assistance for opening of hospitals in the underdeveloped areas of the state.
