Bhubaneswar: Social activist Swami Agnivesh on Friday termed the police action in Govindpur village where the state government has taken up land acquisition exercise since last Sunday, as "criminal."

After arriving here at the Biju Patnaik airport, Agnivesh said, "Government has no right to use force for acquiring land. It is undemocratic, illegal and also criminal."

Allegation of Agnivesh came a day after CPI National Secretary and MP D Raja criticized the state government's midnight action on anti-Posco activists.

The police assaulted innocent anti-displacement agitators in its bid to acquire land for the Posco project, Agnivesh said.

However refuting the charges, Jagatsinghpur SP Satyabrata Bhoi said, "During the land acquisition exercise we have never used force against the people as alleged by Swami Agnivesh. He is free to go the spot and talk to people."

“We acquired lands of those people who were voluntarily willing to hand over their lands to the government for the proposed plant. We have never assaulted the agitators,” Bhoi said.

Agnivesh is scheduled to meet the anti-Posco agitators at the proposed plant site near Paradip today afternoon.
