After SC Rap, Orissa HC Bar Association Decides To Resume Work From Nov 4

Cuttack: After the Supreme Court rap, Orissa High Court Bar Association on Friday decided to put their ongoing cease work agitation on hold and announced to resume court work from November 4.

Announcing the decision, Orissa High Court Bar Association president Gopalkrushna Mohanty informed that “Following Supreme Court’s repeated judgements on disruption in court work and keeping in view larger interests of people, we have called off our strike. However, we will continue to press for our demands as we have lost faith in the Collegium.”

Mohanty further stated that the association will continue to raise its demands in other forums and will hold talks with the Bar Council Of India and other High Court associations across the country.

It is pertinent to mention here that the lawyers have been abstaining from court work since October 14 in protest of the names suggested by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment of judges in the High Court.

Taking cognizance of the ongoing cease-work, the apex court last month issued notices to the president of Orissa High Court Bar Association and chairman of Orissa Bar Council asking them to appear before the bench and explain their conduct on November 8.

“A decision of Collegium clearing names of some candidates (who practices in this court) and not clearing names of other candidates can hardly be a ground for the lawyers to abstain from work,” the Supreme Court bench had ruled earlier.
