After Pulwama, concerns raised over security at Puri Srimandir

Puri: While security has been beefed at all important places including religious sites across the country in the wake of Pulwama terrorist attack on February 14, lack of adequate security at Puri Srimandir has irked local residents and devotees alike.

According to sources, there are no metal detectors in place at three out of the four gates of the temple. All of this has resulted in devotees entering the temple from all gates without any security check. Moreover, the luggage scanner installed at the southern gate of the temple in 2015 has been removed.

“There is no security check here as the metal detectors and CCTV cameras are mostly defunct while devotees are entering the temple from all the gates,” said Jagannath Mishra, a devotee.

Senior servitor Vinayak Das Mohapatra said “With terrorist attacks on religious places, the security at the Srimandir needs to be tightened.”

It is pertinent to mention here that the Puri Municipality has evicted the makeshift shops around the temple as part of the security measures.

On the other hand, Puri SP Umashankar Dash said that focus is being laid on beefing up security measures with deployment of more security personnel at the temple. “Concerning the security at the Srimandir, we will ensure that all adequate measures are taken ahead of elections this year,” Dash said.
