Cuttack: The Health Department officials of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) today raided a sweet shop in Nandi Street area after a local levelled allegation against the shop of selling 'Plastic Rasagolas'.

As per reports, one Akshay Kumar Sahu of nearby locality bought Rasagolas from the shop yesterday but later found them similar to sponges and plastic.

Suspecting adulteration in the preparation of the Rasagolas, Sahu lodged a complaint with the CMC Health Department.

“I am still unsure whether it is sponge or rubber. It is like paying money to buy diseases and nothing else. I bought 10 Rasagolas for Rs 100 but we could not eat and threw everything,” alleged Sahu.

Based on the allegations, the officials today raided the shop and collected the Rasagola sample for quality check and inquired on list of ingredients used.

PK Pradhan, CMC Health Officer stated, “Because a complaint was filed with us, I had to come here. I have collected the sample and sent it for testing to find whether it is plastic. But as far as my experience is concerned, I feel it is not plastic. If we find anything adulterated, necessary action will be taken.”

However, refuting the allegation the shop owner said that the special Rasagola is soft and appears like a sponge as the amount of fat in cottage cheese is reduced. He further stated that this variety of Rasagola is available in plenty and sold in Kolkata as well as several parts of North India.

“This Rasogola is prepared from hot cottage cheese and we don’t mix Semolina (Sooji) and White Flour. It contains low fat and is available mostly in Kolkata, Delhi and other parts of Northern India. I am sure there is no problem as it is 100 % pure,” said Siba Bhagaban Rakhi, shop owner.
