After Orangutan, Nandankanan Zoo Loses A Nilgiri Langur

Bhubaneswar: A day after the death of country's lone Orangutan, Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar today lost a male Nilgiri langur. The primate aged 17 years was brought to Nandankanan Zoo as part of an animal exchange programme with Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai on 26.9.17.

Authorities said that the langur was suffering from diarrhoea and fever and was shifted to Isolation ward of zoo hospital for treatment few weeks ago.

Its health condition showed improvement on May 19 after it underwent treatment under the supervision of experts from the Centre for Wildlife Health. The health committee examined the langur and screened its blood samples from time to time.

Even though preliminary reports claimed that the langur was suffering from some kind of nerve disorder, the authorities have stated that the exact cause of its death shall be ascertained after post mortem today.

Earlier on Wedesdany night, female orangutan named 'Binny', stated to be lone such species in the country died at the zoo following prolonged illness.
