According to sources, located between Purunakatak and Charichhak in Boudh district, the 1,975-metre-long tunnel recently achieved a key construction milestone with a successful breakthrough. Following this, authorities focused on equipping the tunnel with modern safety infrastructure in line with railway safety standards.
The large tunnel now features a high-capacity ventilation system with jet fans designed to maintain proper air quality and effectively manage smoke during emergencies, ensuring safe evacuation if required.
A comprehensive firefighting system has also been installed, including hydrant lines, hose reels and strategically placed fire extinguishers to enable quick response in case of fire incidents.
To address visibility concerns during power failures, the tunnel has been equipped with backup-supported lighting, automated emergency illumination, and clearly marked exit signage to guide passengers safely.
Real-time monitoring and communication systems, such as CCTV surveillance and a public address network, have been introduced to strengthen operational safety. SOS emergency calling units have also been installed to help passengers directly connect with the control rooms, especially in areas with limited mobile network coverage.
Additionally, a Linear Heat Detection System has been deployed for continuous temperature monitoring and early fire risk detection.
Tunnel-7 also incorporates advanced ballastless slab track technology, improving structural stability, reducing maintenance requirements and supporting higher-speed operations.
Once operational, the tunnel will significantly enhance rail connectivity between coastal, western and central Odisha, enabling safer and more efficient passenger as well as freight movement.
“In a sense, the entire project is a challenging one. However, the ECoR team, with complete dedication and attention, is working on the project day and night, so that we will be able to complete it at the earliest,” the ECoR General Manager, Parmeshwar Funkwal, had recently said while speaking to mediapersons.
