Rourkela: Despite all big talks, Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), the biggest government-run hospital in the Steel City seems to have miserably failed in fulfilling its promises to provide good quality healthcare services to the people of the industrial town and other nearby regions.
Patients and their attendants coming to the hospital allege that it is running without a permanent Director, Hospital Superintendent and Deputy Hospital Superintendent apart from being hit due to absence of adequate number of nurses, paramedical staff and dresser.
Patients rue that without critical care equipment like CT Scan machine, Dialysis apparatus and even sufficient Intensive Care Units, most of those who come to the hospital in serious condition are shifted to other premier hospitals like VIMSAR in Burla or SCB hospital in Cuttack.
Santosh Biswal, a local resident of Rourkela said, “We are facing a lot of hardship due to lack of adequate medical equipment in the hospital and are often forced to move to Burla for a simple dialysis procedure.”
“We have given a memorandum to the Director In-charge of the hospital to install a CT Scan machine within 30 days, so that people can get benefit,” added Biswal.
Sources said amid witnessing an ever-increasing footfall of patients each day, the hospital welcomed three new ambulances recently after numerous complaints. Earlier it had only one 108 ambulance and another 102 ambulance to ferry all patients.
Asked about the alleged poor condition of healthcare, the Director In-charge of RGH, Dr.Sudharani Pati said, “I admit that we have shortage of staff and I have written to the district collector to make provisions to fill the vacancies soon.”
However Sarada Prasad Nayak, the MLA of Rourkela rejected all the allegations of staff shortage and said, “There isn’t a single place where you can’t find trouble. It is a part and parcel of life. I hope this problem in the RGH subsides soon.”
