Kendrapara: Several acres of agricultural land were submerged after a major portion of embankment of Pattamundai main canal collapsed near Gopinathpur Sasansahi in Salepur today.

A 30-feet wide breach was formed due to the erosion of the embankment which reportedly caused the inundation in several low lying areas in the region.

The canal is considered an important source of irrigation for the farmers of Cuttack, Jajpur and Kendrapara districts. There are more than 100 small canals which have branched out of Pattamundai canal that extend up to several acres of farming lands.

According to sources, despite repair work of the canal being done at various places, it has collapsed allegedly due to substandard works.

As per latest reports, local authorities have reached the spot to assess the situation.
