A mobile theft accused from West Bengal managed to escape from Chandaka Police Station in Bhubaneswar after allegedly pushing aside two constables on duty, raising serious questions over security arrangements under the Commissionerate Police.
According to sources, the incident occurred on Monday when the accused, identified as Raja from West Bengal, was being interrogated in connection with a mobile theft case.
Reports added that Raja was arrested two days ago for allegedly stealing an iPhone on September 28. During questioning, he complained of nausea and requested permission to use the washroom.
Two constables were assigned to escort him, but moments later, Raja reportedly shoved one of them and sprinted towards the station’s rear gate, escaping before officers could react. Despite chasing him immediately, the constables failed to catch the accused.
Police Face Questions Over Security Lapse
The incident has once again exposed security weaknesses within the Commissionerate Police, especially after a recent high-profile escape from the high-security Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack.
Preliminary reports suggest that the accused took advantage of a brief lapse in attention and the open rear gate to make his escape. The Chandaka Police have since launched an internal inquiry into the incident.
Incident Kept Under Wraps?
Sources indicate that efforts were initially made to keep the incident under wraps, even as the accused remained at large, as police did not disclose this matter to the public nor release any public notification, urging any leads.
As of the last reports, no official statement has yet been issued by the Chandaka Police regarding the escape or the steps being taken to recapture Raja.
