Berhampur: A youth, arrested by the police along with a firearm and ammunition, died in custody at Chamakhandi in Ganjam district as the police attributed the cause of death to suicide.

The accused Raju Nayak (26) of Dasapalla in Nayagarh district had tried to hang himself from the ventilator of the lock-up toilet with blanket and died at the sub-divisional hospital at Chhatrapur yesterday, a senior police officer said.

Nayak was arrested on Monday night after recovery of a pistol and several ammunition from his possession. Police had also impounded his motor cycle.

The post-mortem was conducted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, police said.

As news of his death spread, hundreds of CPI supporters today demonstrated in front of the police station at Chamakhandi demanding judicial inquiry into the incident.

CPI leader and former MLA (Chhatrapur) N Naryan Reddy said "we want the government should order a judicial probe into Nayak`s death in police custody."
