Bhubaneswar/ Kannaur (Kerala): Absconding rape convict Bitihotra Mohanti, who was on the run for nearly six years after jumping parole since December 2006, has finally been arrested in Kerala. He was working incognito at the State Bank of Travancore in Kannaur after furnishing a false identity. While applying for the job, Biiti had introduced himself as Raghav Ranjan. But Bitti’s luck ran out after bank officials suspected his identity and lodged a complaint with the Kannaur police. After the police arrested him on the alleged impersonation case, his real identity was revealed during interrogation.

Bitti is the son of 1972 batch Odisha cadre IPS officer B.B. Mohanti, who retired from service last year after serving as DGP (Home Guards & Fire Services).

Bittihotra was convicted by a Rajasthan court for raping a German girl in March 2006 and was lodged in the Jaipur Central Jail. He had jumped parole since December 4, 2006.
Soon after, the Rajasthan police had lodged a criminal case against the Odisha DGP as he had executed the parole bond for Bitti. A Jaipur court also issued attachment of property proceedings against BB Mohanti as he failed to honour the surety bond of Rs 50,000 furnished by him to
bring Bitti on parole.

Soon after Bitti was arrested on alleged rape charges, BB Mohanti had refuted the charges. He claimed that his son's physical relationship with the German girl was based on mutual consent of both and there was no question of Bitti raping the girl.

"I feel my son has been trapped and has been made to suffer due to vindictive attitude of the foreign national. Prior to the incident the duo had been staying together and moving around with full consent of the foreign national," BB Mohanti had said.

After Bitti jumped parole, both Rajasthan and Odisha police launched a manhunt, but so far the cops had failed to trace him.
