Kendrapara: An assistant sub-inspector of police was arrested on Sunday on charges of outraging modesty of a married woman in Odisha's Kendrapara district.

The accused Sridhar Mahallick, posted at Rajkanika, was arrested following a complaint by a 37-year-old housewife and booked for outraging her modesty, Superintendent of Police Rabi Narayan Behera said.

He was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) at Aul and sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected, Behera said.

The ASI faced charges of sexual harassment, physical contact, advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures, verbal conduct of sexual nature.

As the allegations levelled against him were grave and serious in nature, the matter was being probed under the supervision of a sub divisional police officer which found veracity in the complaint, Behera said.

The case was handled in unbiased manner and the complaint treated on merit though a police office stood as an accused, he said.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that the cop had trespassed to her house in the absence of family members on September 17, touched her indecently and did not stop even when she objected. The cop had gone to her house in connection with investigation of a case.

The accused policeman was absconding after the woman lodged complaint at the police station.
