Dindigul: As many as 63 persons from Odisha employed as bonded labourers at a brick kiln in Mallaiyapuram in the district were rescued today, police said.
 
Sahayanathan of Sempatti near Mallaiyapuram was running the brick kiln where the 63 persons were working for the last eight months without proper food or salaries, they said.
 
Some time back, one person from Odisha, who managed to escape, informed the police in his home state and they in turn alerted their Tamil Nadu counterparts.
 
A police team led by DSP Kuppuraj and tahsildar Rasikala raided the brick kiln and rescued the bonded labourers.
 
All of them were being sent to their native places in Odisha, police added.
 
This is the second major rescue of bonded labourers in the state this month. On June 11, as many as 273 persons also from Odisha and employed as bonded labourers in a brick kiln in Tiruvallur district near Chennai were rescued by police and a local NGO.
