Bhubaneswar: Six of the 18 Odia migrant workers stranded in Dubai have returned to Odisha today following intervention by BJP National Vice President Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda.
As per reports, after the return of the labourers Kalia Jena, Pabitra Mallick, Tuna Mallick, Dibakar Nahaka, Raju Gauda and Santanu Palai, their family members have thanked Jay Panda.
Sources said that the remaining 12 migrant workers will return on August 15. On July 12, the BJP leader had written to the Indian Consul General in Dubai requesting repatriation of 18 workers of Ganjam district.
As per reports, on November 4, 2018, the labourers hailing from Tihania, Ujjwalapur, Padinapalli, Baniaru, Ostapada, Kairasi, Manikapur in Ganjam district had departed for Dubai through an agent Kartik Jena, who took Rs 60,000 from each of them and had assured a remuneration of Rs 35,000 per month.
But even after nine months, the labourers were not paid. Dejected, the labourers decided to protest and refused to work following which the company suspended all of them. Appealing for their rescue, the workers had uploaded a video on social media.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had also sought External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s help for the early repatriation of 18 Odia workers stranded in Dubai. “These stranded Odias from Ganjam district have released video seeking repatriation and payment of their legitimate dues. I would personally urge your kind attention and intervention in the matter on humanitarian ground to ensure that the distress of these persons is mitigated and they are facilitated with an early repatriation to India,” the Petroleum and Steel Minister had said in a letter to Jaishankar.
