In a heart-wrenching incident, a five-year-old girl lost her life after being bitten by a snake while she was asleep at her home. The tragic event occurred on Tuesday night in Kanhusahi village under the Bahanaga police station limits in Balasore district.
The deceased has been identified as Bishnupriya Mallik, a resident of the village. According to family sources, the child was sleeping inside her house when a venomous snake managed to slither in and bit her during the night.
Her parents noticed her deteriorating condition in the early hours and immediately rushed her to the Ishwarpur Community Health Centre (CHC). As her condition remained critical, she was then shifted to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for further treatment.

Despite the efforts of the doctors, the child succumbed to the snakebite while undergoing treatment.
In a bid to assist authorities and for their own closure, the family managed to capture the snake responsible for the bite. It is unclear what species it was, but experts suspect it may have been a highly venomous variety common in rural Odisha.
The incident has left the entire village in mourning. Locals have urged the district administration to take preventive measures, such as awareness drives on snakebite safety, distribution of anti-venom kits in remote health centres, and regular clearing of vegetation around village homes.
